UM Board rejects plan for interpretive sign near Jefferson statue

The University of Missouri Board of Curators has voted against adding a contextual sign next to the Thomas Jefferson statue on campus.

The board voted 7-1 against a task force recommendation Thursday. The sign would have included information about why the statue is on campus, as well as detailing Jefferson’s achievements and shortcomings.

Petitioners last year asked for the statue to be taken down because Jefferson was a slaveowner. Mizzou chancellor Mun Choi ultimately decided against removal. Two people were arrested last year for vandalizing the statue.
