Unlicensed massage therapist accused of sexual abuse

A Columbia man is accused of sexually abusing a client he was supposed to be professionally massaging.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports that Karl Swope, 67, is a former chiropractor who is also a defendant in a civil case filed this summer by the Board of Therapeutic Massage. It accuses him of practicing massage therapy without a license. The newspaper also reports the suit accuses him of touching three women in a sexual manner.

The newest allegations obtained by the Tribune stem from an alleged sexual abuse that happened in April. According to the probable cause statement, which was filed on Wednesday, the victim went to Swope’s home for a massage. Swope told her he was a retired chiropractor and had certificates on the wall near the massage table.

The Tribune reports Swope apparently told her undress down to her underwear. He massaged the area near her breast and near her genitals, and even put his hand inside her underwear. The victim said she didn’t report it right away because she thought she might be overreacting.

Swope is not in custody, so there is no mug shot available for him.
