Increasing COVID cases and quarantines at Southern Boone Middle School in Ashland have prompted the district to require masks effective this (Thursday) morning.

Southern Boone Middle School principal Justin Griffith has written a letter to parents, saying the 14-day mask requirement will end on October 6. He says it’s being done because the middle school has reached 15 percent of its population out, due to COVID-related positives and quarantines.

Mr. Griffith says this is part of a plan approved by the school board in August.

He says the middle school currently has 81 students and staff who’ve either tested positive for COVID or are in quarantine as a close contact.

The mask requirement at Southern Boone Elementary is set to end on September 30, one week from today. About 20 parents of elementary students protested the elementary mask mandate last Friday.
