Six of the 12 people killed in Friday night’s tornado outbreak across the state were in southeast Missouri’s Wayne County.
One of the hardest-hit areas was Piedmont, a rural town of about 1,900 residents. The Boone County Fire Protection District sent its disaster situation awareness and reconnaissance team to Piedmont early Saturday morning. The team is a division of Columbia-based Missouri Task Force One (MO-TF1), and is equipped to conduct disaster mapping, widespread search operations and situational overnight. They used small unmanned aircraft systems and aerial vehicles Saturday in Piedmont.
Boone County Fire Protection District assistant chief Gale Blomenkamp tells 939 the Eagle that the team returned to Columbia from Piedmont late Saturday night.
