While there were no serious injuries, the Central Missouri Humane Society (CMHS) says Friday morning’s trailer incident involving an employee at their Columbia facility demonstrates the urgent need for a new facility.

The Central Missouri Humane Society says a longtime employee became trapped this morning inside their food storage trailer after it suddenly tipped backward. Officials from the Humane Society describe the incident as terrifying, saying the employee was sent tumbling to the back of the trailer as hundreds of pounds of food fell around her and on her. Columbia firefighters quickly pulled her out.

The Central Missouri Humane Society says its shelter on Columbia’s Big Bear was built in 1976. They say it’s been degrading for years and is not safe for their animals, staff or the public. They add they have to raise the money for a new facility and that it must be done now.
