Columbia voters will cast ballots on Proposition One in August. City manager De’Carlon Seewood has told 939 the Eagle that if voters approve Proposition 1, $38-million would be generated annually and that there would be 50 additional police officers and 40 additional firefighters over four years. There are also plans for two new fire stations with apparatus and a new police station.

Mr. Seewood says public safety is one of the most important services the city provides and that residents deserve clear information. Columbia Police and firefighters plan a Thursday evening presentation on Proposition 1. Thursday’s forum is from 7-8 pm at the Sports Fieldhouse on Philips Farm Road.

Proposition One’s official ballot language reads as follows:

“Shall the municipality of Columbia, Missouri impose an additional citywide sales tax at a rate of one percent, solely for the purpose of providing revenues to improve public safety for the city, which shall be limited to expenditures on equipment, salaries and benefits, and facilities for police and fire departments?”
