Boone County prosecutors have charged 47-year-old Brandon Butchkoski with first degree arson and possession of a controlled substance. Court documents describe Butchkosi as homeless, and a motion from Boone County prosecutors describe him as a “chronic trespass offender” who appears to be escalating his trespass and property damage behavior to arson.

The alleged incident happened on Sunday June 29. Court documents say the backpack thrown on the home’s roof had gasoline. Butchkoski has prior convictions in Tennessee and Ohio and has an active warrant for his arrest in Ohio for absconding, according to court documents.

The court documents say the homeowner was only able to prevent the fire from spreading due to a bystander knocking on his door and letting him know the roof was on fire. The homeowner used a hose to put the fire out, and there were no injuries.
