A Boone County jury deliberated for two hours on Friday before returning a not guilty verdict involving the 2023 death of a child in daycare operator Sarah Brown’s care.
Reporter Allison Patton from our news partner ABC-17 says Brown and defense attorney Richard Hicks began crying in the courtroom, when the verdict was read by Judge Jeff Harris. The 58-year-old Brown was charged with involuntary manslaughter, a class C felony.

ABC-17 quoted Counselor Hicks as telling the jury that not every tragic event is a crime. Boone County assistant prosecutor Melissa Buchanan told the jury that an accident based on criminally reckless conduct is still a crime.
