A Columbia man with a lengthy criminal record is now charged with knocking a man unconscious and stomping on his head, in front of multiple CPD officers.

Boone County prosecutors have charged 54-year-old Daniel Dwyer with first degree assault for last Monday’s daytime attack near Fourth and Locust downtown. Court documents say Dwyer is homeless and that he has prior convictions for first degree assault, domestic assault and other crimes.

The Columbia Police Department’s graphic two-page probable cause statement says Dwyer allegedly punched the victim so hard that the victim fell to his knees. Columbia police officers were nearby and intervened, as blood came from the back of the victim’s head. Court documents say police chief Jill Schlude assisted officers in detaining Dwyer. Chief Schlude is quoted in court documents as saying she saw Dwyer stand over the unconscious victim and stomp on his head. Blood was seen coming from the victim’s eyes, according to court documents.

Dwyer will appear in Boone County Circuit Court Thursday. He’s currently jailed without bond, and Judge Kayla Inez Jackson-Williams will decide if Dwyer should receive bond.
