A 60-year-old Columbia man is fighting for his life, after his moped was struck by a vehicle near West Broadway and Heather lane on Thursday afternoon. Residents who live in that area say there are numerous crashes there.

Columbia Police say the crash happened at about 2 pm, when a moped ridden by the 60-year-old man was traveling westbound on West Broadway. CPD says the moped crossed into the passing lane and collided with a vehicle driven by a 26-year-old Columbia woman. CPD investigators say the victim, who was not wearing a helmet, was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Columbia Police describe their investigation as ongoing, and they encourage anyone with information to call Columbia Crimestoppers at (573) 875-TIPS. You can call that number anonymously.

Columbia resident Clover Chenoweth-Helmka, who lives in that area, says motorists are speeding 10 to 20 miles an hour over the speed limit in that area. She’s posted on CPD’s Facebook page that there are numerous crashes in West Broadway and Heather. Other residents in that area agree, and say they plan to complain to Columbia Fourth Ward councilman Nick Foster.
