A household name in Columbia sporting goods for more than six decades has closed its doors permanently. Red Weir Athletic Supplies once had a store on the Mizzou campus and a location in Jefferson City. Red Weir, which opened in 1959, closed its doors on Columbia’s West Broadway on Saturday.
Owner Mike Weir, Red Weir’s son, tells 939 the Eagle that his father started the shop in the basement of his home in 1959 before moving downtown to Broadway, next to Buchroeders. Mr. Weir says Red Weir also had a store on Mizzou’s campus at one time, along with stores in Jefferson City, Sedalia and Raytown.
The owners are retiring and Mr. Weir thanks customers for their patronage for their past 63 years.
