Columbia/Boone County health officials say eight cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported this week in Boone County.

Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services (PHHS) is working with state health officials to determine if this increase in cases is related to the national outbreak. PHHS says initial investigations indicate local transmission.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) confirms 1,645 domestic cases since May 1.

Columbia/Boone County health officials say cyclosporiasis is a gastrointestinal illness caused by a parasite. They say symptoms include frequent diarrhea, weight loss, bloating, nausea and fatigue. Columbia health officials also say risk of exposure can be reduced by thoroughly washing produce under clean, running water.
