Mizzou officials are planning a groundbreaking ceremony for Thursday morning for two additions to the University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR) in Columbia, which is down the hill from Faurot Field.

UM System President Dr. Mun Choi says one is a two-story addition, while the other is a three-story addition. He says the new additions will streamline MURR operations and will greatly increase the number of medical doses available for patient care.

MURR is the nation’s top-ranked University research reactor. MURR produces a medical isotope that battles various cancers worldwide. It’s the nation’s only producer of four medical isotopes used in lifesaving treatments for liver, thyroid, pancreatic and prostate cancer. MURR operates at ten megawatts and it’s the highest-power university research reactor in the United States.
You’ll see President Choi and UM Board of Curators chairman Todd Graves carrying shovels at today’s ceremony. Some Missouri lawmakers are also expected to attend.
