Federal officials have filed an immigration detainer against a man from Venezuela who was arrested at a bank ATM Saturday night on Columbia’s Buttonwood drive. Boone County prosecutors have filed felony property damage and stealing charges against 21-year-old Carlos Eduardo Hernandez-Moreno, who is jailed without bond in Boone County.

Court documents say Columbia Police allegedly found $25,000 in his vehicle that came from Missouri Credit Union Bank’s ATM. Columbia Police say they also found various running laptops in the vehicle. CPD believes Hernandez-Moreno is likely part of a criminal organization committing similar crimes nationwide.

CPD’s two-page probable cause statement says multiple ATM thefts have happened in several main cities in Missouri. Court documents say there have been two suspects in the other cases, and that it’s believed that Hernandez-Moreno is working with someone who helps him break into the ATMs.

A motion from Boone County prosecutors describes Hernandez-Moreno as a “danger to flee” and a flight risk, noting he has no driver’s license nor valid identification. That court motion also says federal ICE agents will be notified.
