UPDATE: Masks to be encouraged, rather than required, at Columbia Public Schools effective Friday

Saying that sewershed reports indicate a continued COVID decline in the community, Columbia Public Schools (CPS) will return to a masks-encouraged status starting Friday morning.

CPS spokeswoman Michelle Baumstark says a message from Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood has been sent to CPS employees and student families. Dr. Yearwood says staffing and substitute fill rates indicate major improvements this week and that CPS student attendance has also dramatically improved.

Baumstark suggested this would happen last Friday, noting progress. She said last Friday that CPS was extending the current mask requirement through February 11 to better determine the impact of COVID, once all students and staff returned to buildings.

Superintendent Yearwood and Ms. Baumstark say the safety of students and employees continues to be CPS’ top priority.
