Missouri voters have overwhelmingly rejected Amendment Five, a proposed constitutional amendment that would have phased out the individual state income tax and authorize the expansion of sales and use taxes.
Amendment Five failed statewide 83 percent to 16.6 percent. It was defeated handily in both blue and red counties.
Governor Mike Kehoe (R) pushed Amendment Five, saying it would have put money back in Missourians’ pockets. He says Tennessee is the model, noting they don’t have a state income tax.
The 26,000 member Missouri Realtors group led opposition to the measure. They say it would have let politicians ignore tax restrictions that voters put in the state Constitution, including the Hancock Amendment.
