State Department of Transportation (MoDOT) crews say they’ve made excellent progress on the demolition of the St. Charles road bridge over I-70 in east Columbia.

The demolition started Friday evening and continues on this Sunday morning.

MoDOT Improve I-70 program director Eric Kopinski tells 939 the Eagle that there is still a fair amount of foundation removal and clean-up work. He also says that if crews continue at this pace, MoDOT will have both eastbound and westbound lanes reopened by Sunday evening. Mr. Kopinski thanks motorists, saying “we appreciate everyone hanging in there with us.”

This is at mile marker 131, near EquipmentShare’s Columbia headquarters. Traffic on I-70 at the bridge is currently one lane in each direction, with drivers using the off ramp to exit I-70 and the on-ramp on the other side of the bridge to get back on the interstate.

It’s all part of the bipartisan $2.8 billion in funding that Missouri lawmakers approved in 2023 to rebuild and expand I-70 to six lanes between Wentzville and Blue Springs.
