A horrific, fiery head-on collision Monday afternoon between a tractor trailer and a U-haul on I-70 in Columbia killed two motorists and closed much of the interstate for hours.

Columbia Police say the incident happened at about 2:30 on Monday afternoon, near the Business Loop exit.

CPD investigators say a tractor trailer traveling westbound struck a vehicle going westbound, before the semi driver swerved and crossed the median into the lanes of eastbound I-70. The semi struck an eastbound U-Haul head on. Columbia Police say both adult females in the U-Haul were killed: one was pronounced dead at the scene and the other died at a local hospital.

The victims’ names have not been released, pending notification of relatives.

Our news partner KMIZ’s Nia Hinson reports the U-Haul caught fire after the collision. The crash closed both eastbound lanes of I-70 and the westbound passing lane for hours. Columbia Police say a total of seven vehicles were involved in the crash, adding that the number of injuries is unknown.
