Columbia’s city council will hold a public hearing later this month before they decide to accept a $2.5 million state grant to build a new arena and livestock barn at the former Boone County Fairgrounds near Highway 63.

939 the Eagle’s Mike Murphy, who publishes Comobuz, reports the long-planned multi-million dollar redevelopment of the former Boone County Fairgrounds into a regional multi-use indoor-outdoor recreational facility is coming to fruition after decades of discussion.

Columbia Parks and Recreation and its Denver-based consultant want to operate it cost-neutral. The consultant says market research suggests roller derby and college wrestling are potential uses, along with baseball training. Golf tunnels and batting cages are also possible, according to Mr. Murphy. A final report from the feasibility study is expected to be delivered to the city later this month.

Boone County gave the 135-acre property to the city in 2020 at no cost.
