The Florida man charged with last September’s deadly triple shooting in downtown Columbia that killed a 21-year-old nursing student is scheduled to be in court Tuesday morning for a hearing.

Boone County prosecutors have charged 24-year-old Misael Covarrubias with second degree murder, two counts of first degree assault and four other felonies for the September 2025 triple shooting near Ninth and Broadway that killed Stephens College senior nursing student Aiyanna Williams.

The Columbia Police Department’s three-page probable cause statement alleges that Covarrubias fired his pistol 11 times in what court documents describe as “the busy, crowded downtown area.” CPD investigators said at the time that Covarrubias was involved in a verbal altercation and that he allegedly fired several shots toward the people he was arguing with. CPD says the three victims struck by gunfire were NOT involved in the altercation.

Stephens College president Dr. Shannon Lundeen said after the murder that their hearts were broken, describing Aiyanna as a “shining Stephens woman whose kindness, drive and joy inspired everyone who knew her.”
Covarrubias is set to appear in Boone County Circuit Court Tuesday morning at 9, before Judge Stephanie Morrell.
