The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control (DDCC) is now investigating this weekend’s deadly officer-involved shooting in Columbia.
CPD says the suspect who was shot and killed was a murder suspect in Moberly who refused to drop a knife. Saturday night’s incident happened after 10 pm in the 1500 block of Raleigh drive in north Columbia, east of Rangeline.
CPD says they were contacted Saturday by Moberly Police to assist in locating and arresting the murder suspect. The homicide happened in Moberly. CPD’s SWAT and its crisis negotiation teams responded to Raleigh drive, where the suspect’s vehicle was found. They arrived on-scene at about 9 pm and determined the suspect was inside, along with an adult female and multiple juveniles. Columbia Police say they spoke to the woman by phone and that she indicated she was in danger. CPD says that around 10 pm, the suspect came out of the house armed with a knife and would not comply with orders to drop the knife. Police say they deployed less-lethal methods to apprehend the suspect, but it didn’t work. Police say because the suspect was still a threat to the police officers as well as the people inside the home, multiple officers fired at the suspect, who was struck by gunfire. While first aid was provided, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Columbia Police requested that the DDCC investigate the officer-involved shooting, which is standard procedure. CPD’s internal affairs unit is also reviewing the incident. Because the suspect’s next of kin has not been notified, his name is not being released yet.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s DDCC at (573) 751-1000.
