Boone County firefighters say two motorists are hospitalized Thursday evening after a vehicle overturns in the I-70 construction zone east of Columbia.
The Boone County Fire Protection District says multiple callers to 911 reported the overturned vehicle at about 2:15 this afternoon on eastbound I-70 at the 136 mile marker. Firefighters quickly arrived and found a single vehicle on its roof. The two occupants were transported by Callaway County EMS to local hospitals, according to the fire district.
The crash also closed a lane of eastbound I-70, backing traffic up. Volunteers from the Millersburg Fire Protection District also responded with an engine and multiple firefighters.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol has been urging motorists to slow down in the 20-mile work zone stretch of I-70 between Columbia and Kingdom City. MoDOT crews are involved in a $405-million project to rebuild and expand I-70 between the two cities.
