Widespread vaccine distribution expected to be challenging

It is not clear yet when most people in Boone County will be able to get a coronavirus vaccine.

Health Director Stephanie Browning told the Columbia City Council on Monday night that front line healthcare workers will keep getting the first wave of shots.

“That’s a significant part of our workforce, because it’s not just the hospital employees. It’s doctor’s offices, dentist offices, all of those that have patient interactions. So that’s a really large group.”

From there, the shots will likely go to older people and workers considered essential. Browning says the county is working with its partners on how to distribute the vaccine here.

“In the old days, you could line them up. Now, we have to keep them six feet apart. Then, we have to observe them for at least 15 minutes after the vaccine. So this one is going to be a little bit of a challenge.”
