Winter weather causes crashes, school cancellations

Winter weather led several local school districts to cancel classes on Monday. See the list here.

Columbia Regional Airport only recorded an inch of snow over the weekend, but it was enough to cause several accidents. The Highway Patrol’s mid-Missouri Troop F worked 64 crashes from Saturday afternoon to early Sunday morning. There were no reports of any local deaths in those accidents.

More than 6,000 mid-Missourians shivered for part of Sunday after two power outages. The first one knocked out power in and around Centertown to about 1,000 homes. The second outage affected about 5,000 customers in Holts Summit and New Bloomfield. Both outages lasted several hours.

Forecasters expect temperatures to stay well below freezing all week. Some road treatments won’t work as well in the cold.
