With winter just around the corner, Columbia’s city council will hear a detailed report Monday night about winter weather and snow removal.

Public works is recommending that no changes be made to first, second or third priority routes. Columbia currently maintains 1,418 total lane miles, and 691 priority lane miles.

The council recently approved three additional positions for the street department. The city is working to fill those three positions and five other vacant positions as quickly as possible.

The city has 21 tandem and single axle trucks, 11 one-ton trucks, three class 5 trucks and a dedicated motor grader. Three backhoes and two skid steers are also available.

Columbia public works says that during a typical winter storm, 22 to 28-person crews report for duty for 12-hour shifts.
