Sen. Blunt: Election year should not impact process to fill Supreme Court seat

Missouri’s senior U.S. Senator says the country should not have to wait until after the election to find Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s replacement on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Republican Roy Blunt was on CBS’s Face The Nation this weekend. He says since the White House and Senate are controlled by the same party, they have an obligation to start the process now.

“The Constitution is the Constitution,” said Blunt. “This should take as long as it needs to take, but no longer. There is plenty of time to get this done, but to get it done before Election Day, everything has to work pretty precisely.”

Blunt and other Senate Republicans refused to meet with Barack Obama’s nominee for the high court, Merrick Garland, in 2016.

Ginsburg died Friday at the age of 87. She served 27 years on the Supreme Court.
