(AUDIO) Former Columbia city manager Mike Matthes on new job

Former Columbia city manager Mike Matthes says he is enjoying his time in the private sector.

Matthes, who resigned as city manager last November, now works for the business consulting group Organizational Health Assessment.

“I’m five years younger,” Matthes said. “I lost weight. I get to have a much healthier balance in my life, so it’s terrific.”

Matthes says it takes a thick skin to work in the public sector.

“[In America] We are legally allowed to treat government employees like hell, and you don’t get any ramifications for that. You can say anything you want, no matter how untrue or how mean. You don’t get to do that in the private sector.”
