Missouri State auditor Nicole Galloway says the state needs to find a better way to keep track of sex offenders.
A recent audit found the location of more than 1,300 sex offenders are not known to local law enforcement agencies and therefore, unknown to the public.
“These individuals are not self-reporting, and then law enforcement is not following up and warrants are not being pursued,” said Galloway.
The audit report found that 800 of the registered sex offenders that are off the grid are classified as the most-dangerous offenders, having been convicted of violent sex crimes such as rape.
