(AUDIO) Columbia superintendent Peter Stiepleman

Columbia Public Schools is now using an outside collection agency to collect lunch money from parents who are choosing not to pay for their kids’ food.

“The very moment you’re able to demonstrate that you just can’t [pay], then we get you on that free and reduced lunch. But the law doesn’t allow us to backdate it, CPS Supt. Peter Stiepleman says.

Collection efforts start when the debt is higher than $50.
