Rain is not expected to be a factor during Tuesday evening’s opening of the 2023 Boone County fair in Columbia.

The fair, which dates to 1835, opens at 5 pm at the fairgrounds, on Oakland Gravel road near Highway 63. The Boone County Fair princess, teen queen and queen will be crowned this evening at 7 in the air-conditioned coliseum, and Liz and Scotty from our Zimmer sister station Clear-99 will emcee.

ABC-17 meteorologist Chance Gotsch is expecting partly cloudy skies for this evening’s opening night. The temperature is expected to be about 83 at 6 this evening. Admission tonight is $10, with children six and under free. Carnival wristbands are $20. The carnival will operate from 6-10 tonight.

Former Boone County fair board president Jeff Cook announced last year that the fair would be staying at the fairgrounds on Columbia’s Oakland Gravel, an announcement that drew loud applause at the ham breakfast. Columbia deputy city manager Mike Griggs has described that decision as a win-win for the fair board, the county and the city.
