The outgoing Boone County fair board president announced Saturday that the fair will be staying at the fairgrounds on Oakland Gravel road in Columbia, an announcement that drew applause at the ham breakfast.

Jeff Cook tells 939 the Eagle that this is where it needs to be.

“Columbia Parks and Recreation, they’ve designated 29 acres for the fair and that is a permanent location. So, we’re home,” Cook says.

Columbia acting deputy city manager Mike Griggs is thrilled with the announcement, telling 939 the Eagle that this is a win-win for the fair board, the county and the city.

“This site is home for the Boone County fair, and it will continue to be home here as long as they want to be here. We will make a space for them. So it’s very important for us as Columbians to have this connection to not just our city but our whole county agricultural community,” says Griggs.

While attendance numbers are still being calculated, Mr. Cook is pleased with last week’s fair turnout. He notes people and families turned out every evening, despite excessive heat.
