Columbia considers options on federal coronavirus relief funds

Columbia’s mayor says he’s been waiting for two months to hear back from Boone County on how it will pay out federal coronavirus relief money.

Brian Treece said during Monday night’s council meeting the city needs to plan for a fiscal year that starts Oct. 1.

“I just think anything that we can do to begin to recover and forward-looking estimate of ongoing expenses related to this pandemic that shows no end we probably need to have that conversation and budget appropriately.”

The city wants the county to hand out that CARES Act money proportionately. Most of Boone County’s population lives in Columbia.

The city and county have reached an agreement to pay for more contact tracers to respond to local coronavirus cases. City staffers also suggested using some relief money for small business loans.
