One man dead after Columbia house fire

A man is dead after a fire on the south side of Columbia Thursday morning.

It happened just before 3 a.m. at 3413 Balboa Lane, near Providence Road and Nifong Boulevard.

When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke conditions but no fire on one side of the duplex. The conditions in the duplex allowed the fire to extinguish itself before firefighters got there.

Jason Ian Frazier, 38, was found unconscious in a bedroom. Paramedics and fire personnel provided aide, but he was pronounced dead.

The assistant fire marshal determined that the fire began in the kitchen as a result of unattended cooking.

Both units in the duplex had working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
