The city of Columbia has shut down elevators to the top two floors of the Fifth and Walnut parking garage downtown, a garage that’s been the site of several suicides.
City spokeswoman Sydney Olsen tells 939 the Eagle that the elevators stopped running to the eighth and ninth floors in September.
ABC 17-News reports a Columbia woman jumped from the garage to her death last month. The woman’s family and others urged the city to take action.
The city has also placed wooden boards over parking entrances and stairwell doors in the garage, according to KMIZ.
