CPS board candidate Seamon supports IEP parent recordings

A Columbia school board candidate says he supports letting parents record individual education plan meetings. The district has pointed to privacy concerns and other potential issues.

Candidate David Seamon says the CPS staffers he has talked to are ok with the parent recordings, if the district trains them on what to say first.

“They don’t have a problem with the parents recording it, but they don’t feel like they have the training to be able to say the things necessary in those meetings,” Seamon says. “They don’t want any litigation to come back if they say something incorrectly.”

Seamon is an operations manager at Scholastic in Jefferson City. He and is wife are both Rock Bridge High School graduates.

“I wanted to ensure that the students coming up now have the same education and opportunities that I had.”

Seamon agrees with a gradual approach to holding in-person classes again, more like a dimmer than a light switch. He’s one of four candidates for the three open Columbia school board seats in the June 2 election.
