Tuesday’s total first-day enrollment for fast-growing Columbia Public Schools (CPS) is up by 357 students compared to last year’s total official enrollment.

District spokeswoman Michelle Baumstark says CPS’ total first day enrollment was 19,157. CPS is currently Missouri’s fifth-largest school district, with enrollment skyrocketing by more than 2,000 in the past 12 years.

Ms. Baumstark notes these are unofficial numbers and that the official enrollment number is calculated in late September as required by the state.

CPS reports an excellent opening day. Columbia remains under an excessive heat warning this morning. While all district schools are air-conditioned, CPS has encouraged families to send a water bottle with their student today.
