UPDATE – 4:40 p.m. – The Columbia Police Department is investigating a death in downtown Columbia.
Officers found the body of a male subject on 6th Street near Walnut at around 3:50 p.m. Tuesday.
The cause of death is currently under investigation and police said a section of 6th Street would be blocked off for a period of time.
The department spokesperson said it’s unclear how long the investigation will take, and it’s also unclear from where the body came.

ORIGINAL: Columbia police announced the department was investigating a death in downtown Columbia.
A social media post gave very little information about the circumstances of the death, but the department said it will be addressing reporters at the intersection of Broadway and 6th Street.

The city’s public works department also posted on social media that the east entrance and exit of the Fifth and Walnut Parking Garage is closed for the investigation.
It’s unconfirmed whether the death investigation is underway inside the parking structure.
The east entrance and exit of the Fifth and Walnut Parking Garage are currently closed for a death investigation. Those exiting the garage will be directed to exit the west side entrance.
