DOJ watchdog report takeaways: Nuance, no total absolution

(AP) A report by the Justice Department’s internal watchdog has found the FBI had a legitimate reason to open up one of the most politically sensitive investigations ever.

That’s the Russia probe that began in secret during Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and that eventually was taken over by special counsel Robert Mueller.

But the report also documents errors during the probe that Trump and his supporters could seize on as vindication.

The report was issued Monday. It had been highly anticipated, in Washington anyway. The report’s conclusions are nuanced and are making it difficult for any side to claim victory.
