James T. Scott lynching marker vandalized

Columbia police are investigating after someone vandalized the James T. Scott lynching historical marker.

City officials said Friday the marker was taken off its base and found damaged nearby on the MKT Trail. Police are still working to identify suspects.

The marker commemorates the 1923 lynching of James T. Scott, a black man who was accused of rape and hanged by a mob while awaiting trial.

Officials say they will work to replace the marker soon and will increase security around the site.
