Last week’s federal and state warrant sweep in the Columbia area resulted in 32 felony arrests, 19 federal indictments and 21 felony state warrants.
U.S. Attorney Matthew Price and Columbia Police Chief Jill Schlude briefed reporters Monday afternoon at city hall on “Operation Brightside”. U.S. Attorney Price tells reporters that the operation focused on wanted suspects who pose an elevated risk to public safety. He says the mission was straightforward:
“Use existing Missouri-based law enforcement personnel and resources in a coordinated way to serve warrants. Arrest individuals wanted for serious crimes, identity additional evidence to support successful federal and state prosecution,” Price says.
The U.S. Attorney says his office established a coalition of Missouri-based federal, state and local law enforcement agencies in December 2024, aimed at addressing violent crime and gun crimes in the Columbia area. They formed a Violent Crime Abatement Team (VCAT). Federal prosecutors describe some of the 32 arrested on felony charges as some of the most violent offenders in the Columbia area. U-S Attorney Price describes Operation Brightside as a homegrown solution to a hometown problem.

U.S. Attorney Price says violence in the Columbia area is unacceptable, especially when innocent people are being harmed. 939 the Eagle News asked the U.S. Attorney about the 19 federal indictments:
“Of the 19 federal indictments, some of those may still be under seal. Information about those indictees will be released through the normal course through the U.S. Attorney’s office press release,” Mr. Price says.
U.S. Attorney Price praises UM System President Dr. Mun Choi’s call to address violent crime. The U.S. Attorney confirms that his office was already investigating violence in Columbia before September’s triple shooting downtown that killed Stephens College nursing student Aiyanna Williams. The U-S Attorney says that was the “straw the broke the camel’s back.”
Columbia police chief Jill Schlude praises Operation Brightside, saying it demonstrates the power of true partnerships.
