New year begins at Columbia Public Schools

It’s time for a new school year in Columbia. Classes for most public school students in town start on Thursday.

Superintendent Peter Stieplema says you’ll notice a lot of construction in the district, including work at Oakland Middle School all year.

“As we build a new school south of town, we have to also make sure that we’re taking care of those older buildings. Because this is one big district and, boy, are we grateful that our community continues to give us the funds to be able to renew and renovate those existing structures.”

The new middle school on Sinclair Road will open next fall.
