Hundreds of people turned out for Monday night’s vigil for a Columbia Rock Bridge high school employee who was murdered Friday evening at a Tennessee rest stop, near Chattanooga.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) says 55-year-old Michael Woods Jr. of Columbia was found shot to death in a rest area bathroom.

The TBI says Woods’ son, 30-year-old Micah McElmurry of Decatur, is jailed without bond. He’s charged with one count of criminal homicide. That’s similar to a first degree murder charge in Missouri.

Our news partner ABC-17 reports hundreds of people turned out for the vigil for Mr. Woods at Rock Bridge’s football stadium. Several speakers describe him as a father figure for students.

Woods was Rock Bridge’s home-school communicator. CPS spokeswoman Michelle Baumstark says his role was to connect with students and families and that he did his job admirably. Baumstark tells 939 the Eagle that “everyone knew and loved Mr. Woods.”
