Stephens Lake closes over algae concerns

It’s looking like Stephens Lake may be closed for the year.

A Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services official said there could be harmful algae in the lake near Broadway and Old Highway 63, Columbia Parks and Recreation said Thursday.

Large growths of algae can take out oxygen in the water, leading to more toxins and bacteria that may make you and animals sick.

Stephens Lake was already scheduled to close for the season on Sept. 30.
