Suicide prevention fundraiser is planned for Monday evening in Columbia

A suicide prevention fundraiser will be held in Columbia Monday night to honor a 23-year-old woman who died in September at the Fifth and Walnut parking garage.

The event begins at 7 at Rose Music Hall, and is called HavenFest. It will honor Haven Thomason.

Event organizer Josie Martin, a 2015 Hickman graduate, has lost about two dozen friends to suicide and drug overdoses, and Haven was one of her best friends.

Martin tells 939 the Eagle that there have been ten suicides at the Fifth and Walnut garage.

The city of Columbia has shut down elevators to the eighth and ninth floors of that garage. City spokeswoman Sydney Olsen tells the Eagle that the elevators stopped running to the eighth and ninth floors in September.
