Troopers: Harrisburg-area head-on crash happened when driver tried to pass vehicle on hillcrest

Boone County firefighters are crediting neighbors for immediately alerting authorities after Tuesday night’s horrific head-on crash on Highway 124 near Harrisburg.

It happened at about 8:40, and Boone County Fire Protection District assistant chief Gale Blomenkamp says neighbors heard the noise and drove down the road to see what happened. They immediately called police and fire units, and Blomenkamp says they quickly arrived on-scene.

Blomenkamp tells our news partner ABC-17 that one motorist was lifeflighted.

“So the female driver is in critical condition. She was lifeflighted to University Hospital. Two pediatric patients in that vehicle were also transported by ground with moderate injuries,” Blomenkamp says.

Missouri state troopers say 29-year-old Krystal Smith of Fayette suffered serious injuries, and she’s been taken to University Hospital. The Patrol says the crash happened when 19-year-old Chandler Cooke of Harrisburg tried to pass a vehicle on a hillcrest, before slamming head-on into Smith’s vehicle.

Cooke sustained moderate injuries, as did two juvenile occupants in Ms. Smith’s Buick Century.

The Patrol’s crash report also says Cooke was driving without insurance.
