The National Weather Service (NWS) says Thursday’s storms and heavy rain set a daily rainfall record at Columbia Regional Airport (COU).
NWS St. Louis meteorologist Jared Maples tells 939 the Eagle that 3.28 inches of rain fell Thursday at COU, breaking the previous record of 2.5 inches recorded on August 6, 1995. Mr. Maples tells 939 the Eagle that some Columbia residents saw MORE than six inches of rain, noting the heaviest rainfall was along and near the I-70 corridor.
Columbia Regional Airport is the official weather observation station locally for the NWS.
The Boone County Office of Emergency Management encourages you to report any weather damage at your house or in your neighborhood. 939 the Eagle’s Mike Murphy reports Columbia firefighters responded to at least eight water rescues on Thursday. One of those rescues involved two occupants who had been trapped by high water near Blackfoot road and Bear Creek. The Boone County Fire Protection District was involved in that rescue as well.
The Boone County Fire Protection District says their crews responded to more than 12 calls for service, including six floodwater-related emergency calls.
