Construction could start this summer on a big new development of houses and shops in southwest Columbia.
The city council this week approved the Westbury Village plan by a 4-3 vote.
Councilman Matt Pitzer was one of the supporters. He says the developer requested no exceptions once the zoning change, asked for no taxpayer dollars, and did everything by the book.
“I would have been concerned about the precedent being set if they had done all those things, and then we still said ‘No, you can’t go ahead there with your plan.'”
Pitzer says you may see the first businesses in the development near Scott Boulevard and Smith Drive in 2021. The full Wake Up Columbia interview on Tuesday:
