It’s the first case in the Show-Me State in 35 years: state health officials confirm that a Missourian has a rare brain infection.

The state Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) says it’s a microscopic free-living ameba that’s found in war freshwater like lakes and rivers. It’s a life-threatening infection known as primary amebic meningoencephaltis (PAM). DHSS is asking you to avoid water-related activities in warm freshwater during hot temperatures.

DHSS says the Missouri patient is currently in intensive care: the department cannot say where the patient is from. DHSS says no other suspected cases of PAM are being investigated in Missouri.
