First responders promise better coordination after east Columbia shootings

Local first responders say they are taking steps to improve coordination, after two people died and three were hurt in an east Columbia shooting.

A statement released Monday said on-scene communication between police officers and medics was not always clear. They plan ride-alongs between agencies, and more joint training scenarios.

An 11-year-old girl named Ri’ajauhna and 38-year-old Tara Knedler were shot and killed early July 5 near Grace Lane and Volunteer Drive. Officers took four victims to the hospital in their patrol cars, after confusion about whether the scene was secure. A 16-year-old is in custody on two counts of second degree murder.
