State transportation officials are warning about significant delays this weekend at the heavily-damaged Sorrels overpass over I-70, just west of Columbia. The bridge was struck by a passing truck in October.

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) says demolition of the overpass will begin tonight (Friday) at 9.

MoDOT says there will be times when the eastbound or westbound I-70 lanes will need to be closed for 15-minute intervals, if crews determine it’s too dangerous for vehicles to travel under the construction zone.

MoDOT also notes that thousands of people are heading to Columbia today and Saturday for state cross country championships at Gans Creek, and many others will be driving to Kansas City for Sunday afternoon’s Chiefs game. Chiefs and Green Bay Packer fans will be impacted.

The agency is urging you to consider alternatives to I-70.
